A few weeks ago, I finally completed my childhood dream: to paddle a canoe from ocean to ocean across North America ☀️
It took way longer than I ever thought possible. The first two photos are of me on the first and second days of this journey near the Pacific, 4 years ago. The rest are from yesterday reaching the Atlantic. I had no idea how much my life would change over the following years. I met so many wonderful people and spent so many days on sandbars communing with nature, writing music, and reflecting on life. I had so many setbacks, but I never stopped returning to the river.
It took me about 3 million paddle strokes, hundreds of days camping. I played dozens of grassroot shows of my original music in towns, camps, and homes along the way. I made life long friendships, weathered countless storms, and ate more instant mashed potatoes than anyone would believe possible.
I had deep conversations with people in unexpected places, laughed to myself about all the little and large things in wild places where no one could else could hear me, and sweat more than any human should.
Now I am here, at the end, and it still hasn't fully hit me. I paddled out into the sea yesterday overcome with emotion. It took so much to be here, bolstered by the kindness of so many amazing humans who believed in me along the way.
The sun was setting as the waves pushed me along the coast to my final camp and I just let go and let myself feel everything. So much ecstatic joy, sacrifice, and gratitude washed through me.
If there is anything I have learned in the last four years, it is that the world is heartbreakingly beautiful. And if you find the courage to listen to your heart and take leaps into the unknown, this beautiful world will likely be there to help you find something priceless. Not just a deeper connection to the world and yourself, but a greater capacity to believe 💛
